I still like to get up American Fork Canyon in the winter. Some good basic runs:
- Follow the snowshoes and snowmobiles, you most likely can run on those compacted surfaces just fine. Take snowshoes on your back if you're not sure and strap them on when snow gets soft.
- Alpine Loop above the S-curve at the Pine Hollow Trailhead. You can take this all the way to Cascade Springs if you're feeling good or down to Sundance. The road is well groomed and runnable, especially if there has been a good melt, then re-freeze.
- The Timpooneke Road is good from the Campground on up, but less traveled and can sometimes be more of a pain to run, but usually mostly runnable. (Start at the S-curve)
- Tibble Fork to Granite Flats to Silver Lake. There are plenty of snowmobile tracks to follow off road that are runnable too (was there this morning). The views are great.
- Tibble Fork up the main canyon - not sure what avalanche danger there could be up there, I've not been all the way up in the winter.
- The high bench running from Cedar Hills to Grove Creek Canyon and up the canyon to the bridge.
- Grove Creek to Dry Canyon (Lindon) via Bonneville Shoreline Trail and other surrounding trails/roads.
- The Timpanogos Foothills are great south facing trails that melt early - there is a spaghetti bowl of bike trails and roads to keep you busy. I often get lost up there in late winter or early spring.
